about

In November, 2013, I was going to grad school, working two jobs and being a father and husband. Time was scarce. We'd also been playing shows and making a small amount of money that we put toward new recording equipment. I eventually got enough money and bought it.

I started testing it out with songs written on the fly. Roughly around three hours, start to finish. At the time, I had a Gospel covers record almost in the can, and demos for two new and very different records which I knew I wanted to take my time with (different drummer, more keys, etc.). But I couldn't really carve out time to finish the Gospel record and/or start one of the others. So I had to work fast if I wanted to record anything of...substance, for lack of a better word.

I found that working fast like this has its perks. I didn't second guess. I was forced to take chord progressions and melodies into different places because I didn't want them to be hackneyed. And I didn't use a drum kit. Instead, I relied on my tried and true brushes-on-the-back-of-a-guitar and an old crappy drum someone gave me. I did have a new mic, which helped.

One other element was my grandfather's old reel to reel. It's got some mojo. For some reason, stuff sounds good when you run that stuff through it. I have no idea why. I used it on "Almost Rans and Also Rans", and it just made it all work. It's just a consumer-grade recorder with standard condensers. And it's noisy. Really noisy. It brings with it some serious "character".

The title track here especially came out of nowhere. I love it.
