about

A few years ago, as an exercise, I started writing songs for the country market. I wanted to see if I could write in a different style and mindset, and also try to make connections and get a publishing deal. A lot of these songs aren't stuff I'd usually write. I sent some of these songs to publishers, wrote a few on spec, and played a couple around Nashville. Nothing ever came of any of it. These are the demos I sent out.

Since I was writing what I thought Country labels were looking for, a lot of the songs almost became parody. For example, "God and Country" is a song I'd never write, except that I was asked to submit a song for a project with country and patriotic themes. "Gone Before the Dawn" is clearly a stab at the prototypical working man song. What I was forgetting is that Nashville has moved on from that, by and large.

I sent a few in for critiques and got decent feedback, and good criticism. But I couldn't sustain writing for an audience I've never really been a part of. Still, I think there are a couple of gems here. "Cold Hard Rain" could've been a hit in the '90's. "Hush" sounds like a perfect fit for Carrie Underwood.

So, here ya go. Nine mediocre pop/country tunes. Enjoy!
