I've always loved the more twisted stories in the Old Testament. There is so much that Gothic/Americana music have in common: stories about being imprisoned or murder, cheating and the world weariness of being poor or beaten down...that's where a lot of the Old Testament thrives and that's where these songs come from as well. "Some Light Murder" is based on the story of David, Bathsheeba, and Jonathon. "I'm Still Gonna Love You" comes from Hosea and Gomer. "Days of 45", as much as it is prescient today, gets some serious inspiration from any number of oppressive kings, both from and outside of Israel. "Rockets Red Glare" uses patriotism as a metaphor for misplaced loyalties, and "Old Times Are Not Forgotten" mourns sardonically the disdain for positive change.

I'm pretty happy with these songs and how they came out. Releasing this was a perfect way to cap 2017: some anger and hurt, but also fortitude and strength in the face of adversity. "You Don't Believe" is probably the most courageous, pointing a fairly sharp finger at faith that finds its subjectivity and its strength in picking and choosing what rules are ours to hold dear. But there's always hope, and there is some here. Just dig a little.
