I suppose every writer hits a wall and in 2016 I found that wall and tried in vain to throw at it anything that would stick. I had forgotten where the neuropath was to writing, or at least it felt like that. I couldn't come up with anything remotely original.

However, I kept plugging away, and slowly, songs like "The Engineer" and "Wanderlust" came. I took my time writing and recording, and although the songs didn't come in a flurry of inspiration (like they did another one of our albums, "Play My Heart"), they did come and I finally got ten tunes that I feel are worth putting out in the world.

"Marky and Ramona" is really about creating your own dream world, as many songwriters do, with characters just like a novel. Your songs can become your escapism. The rest of these songs, though, aren't really fiction but deal with common Double Downbeat themes like running from life, making better choices, and misunderstandings that never get explained.

I suppose it's fitting that a record that was hard won is also one of which I'm the most proud. I don't look at the words and cringe and I don't hear anything that I'm not pleased to release.
